I am a culture vulture. I devour the chance to be a patron of the arts, attending as many events as possible. Offer to play me some music, to show me some pictures, or to read me a poem and I'll come running. I love the opportunity to nourish my soul with tasty artistic morsels.
Arguably, this means that, as a resident of Qatar, I live in totally the wrong place. All too often you hear people say that there's nothing to do in Qatar, that it's not just a literal desert but it's also a cultural one.
This is a somewhat lazy outlook at the arts scene here in Doha. Ok, this is not London, Paris or New York where the details of arts events occurring during one 24-hour period could fill a small book, but seek and you shall find.
The thing is… culture vultures like myself have to search too hard. How often do you find out about an event, a concert, an exhibition or the chance to participate in a workshop after it's closed its doors, moved on to a new city or has stopped taking on new participants. Too often, right?
That's where ArtsQatar.com plans to help. Our mission is simple - to create a single Doha-based online forum where visitors can find out what's happening in relation to the arts in Qatar and where issues relating to the arts can be discussed and reviewed. We want to keep you informed of all that's going on here, whether seriously highbrow or trashily lowbrow.
Yes, it will take time to build up a critical mass of information, but we're committed to doing this and we look forward to welcoming you to this site in the weeks, months and years to come.
