A collaborative mapping experiment to locate spaces of art in Doha
July - September, 2014
Project Space 4 presents a collaborative mapping experiment to locate spaces of art in Doha. A map of Doha is projected on the wall in Mathaf’s Project Space onto which places we experience art will be pinned by the public and the project’s curators. Ephemeral projects and events can also be included. Images and references related to these places can be printed in the space and pasted to the walls, creating a collective image bank. The online map below will be updated to reflect the locations added in the Project Space
The project was conceived by local curators and educators from Katara Art Center, QMA Public Arts, and Mathaf in a recent curatorial workshop at the museum on the subject of critical practice. The workshop addressed the responsibility of cultural practitioners, institutions, and independent art spaces to provide places for constructive dialogue and exchange, and asked how they are currently doing this in Doha. But a more urgent question became clear: where exactly are the spaces for art and creativity in the city?
The Doha Art Map asks us to work together to identify where we see and experience art in Doha and discuss how these could become more generous to our needs.
Contribute to the project online via social media or the myHistro Doha Art Map. Each week, we’ll ask a different question about art spaces and practice in Doha and ask for your input.
Use the hashtag #DohaArtMap to suggest places for inclusion on the online map or leave a comment on myHistro.
The project is collaboratively organized by Noor Jamal Abuissa, Assistant Curator, Public Art, Qatar Museums; Khaltham Daham Al Kuwari, VIP and Gallery Tour Coordinator III, Mathaf; Laura Barlow, Assistant Curator, Mathaf; Leonore-Namkha Beschi, Assistant Curator, Mathaf; Mayssa Fattouh, Artistic Director and Curator, Katara Art Center; Abdellah Karroum, Director, Mathaf; Fatima Mostafawi , Collections / Curatorial, Mathaf; Grace Murray, Education, Mathaf.
